According to Alex Kabba, a journalist who was forced into exile during Sani Abacha’s military regime, the ascension of Bola Tinubu to the presidency will result in the repatriation of Nigerians who fled the country for political and economic reasons.
During a press interaction in Abuja, Kabba highlighted that many Nigerians in the diaspora feel a connection to Tinubu as a fellow former exile, and some even attended his inauguration. Kabba emphasized that a combination of favorable economic policies and a shared history between the exiles and Tinubu will incentivize a mass return of Nigerians. In fact, he himself has made plans to return to Nigeria now that Tinubu is leading the nation.
Kabba stated that the impact of the government’s policies will be significant, not just for political exiles, but also for those who left for economic reasons. He expressed his confidence in Tinubu’s leadership and the positive prospects for Nigeria under his presidency.
Kabba acknowledged the measure of democracy fighters reaping the rewards of their struggle and noted that Tinubu is the first president in the Fourth Republic who actively participated in the fight against military rule. While others were hiding, Tinubu was on the forefront of the NADECO movement, alongside guerrilla journalists like Kabba, who relentlessly challenged the military regime. As a result, Kabba believes that Tinubu’s presidency symbolizes a deserving recognition of his role in Nigeria’s democratic struggle.
