I Regret Not Playing For Senegal – Evra

Patrice Evra, a former Manchester United defender, has expressed regret over his decision to represent France instead of Senegal during his footballing career.

The player disclosed this during an interview with Sports Brief, noting that he was always identified as a Senegalese every time the France team loses a match.

He said, “If I could go back, I would choose to represent my native country, Senegal.

“When I was young, my parents gave me the chance to choose my national team and because I grew up in France, I chose France.

He added, “But I realised later that choosing my own country became political. One of the painful lessons I learned with this pick is that when you play well and win, you are French; when the team loses, you are considered Senegalese.”

Evra represented France at five major tournaments; the 2008, 2012 and 2016 UEFA European Championships, winning a runners-up medal at Euro 2016; and both the 2010 and 2014 FIFA World Cups.

He captained France at the 2010 World Cup although the team performed poorly at the tournament which prompted go on strike after being eliminated in the first round. Afterward, Evra was issued a five-match suspension for his role as captain.

However, the Manchester United legend enjoyed a successful outing at the 2014 World Cup, reaching the quarter-finals under Didier Deschamps as the coach.
