Woman Robs Bank To Sponsor Sister’s Cancer Treatment

A Beirut woman robbed a bank with a toy gun in an attempt to raise funds for her sister’s cancer treatment.

The heist comes on the heel of increased robbery cases in Lebanon, where the savings of citizens has been devalued and restrictions placed on withdrawal for close to three years. The country has been witnessing economic challenges.

The woman identified a Sali Hafiz shared a live video on Facebook of her heist on a Beirut branch of Blom Bank. She was pictured shouting at employees and making demands for money while the bank’s entrances were closed.

She said in the video, “I am Sali Hafiz, I came today… to take the deposits of my sister who is dying in hospital.

“I did not come to kill anyone or to start a fire… I came to claim my rights.”

She said in an interview after the heist that she got $13,000 of the $20,000 she said her family had deposited.

Hafiz added that the cost of her sister’s cancer treatment is $50,000.

According to her, the toy pistol belongs to her nephew.

After the attack, Hafiz and suspected accomplices escaped through a smashed window at the back of the bank before security forces arrived.
