Wike’s Camp Withdraws From Atiku’s Campaign Council

The internal wrangling in the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, took a new turn on Wednesday as loyalists of Governor Nyesom Wike allegedly withdrew from the campaign council of the party’s presidential flagbearer, Atiku Abubakar.

This followed a meeting held in Port Harcourt on Wednesday.

Reports say Wike’s camp vowed not to participate in Atiku’s campaign ahead of the 2023 general elections.

The group loyal to Governor Wike of Rivers State remains resolute that the party’s National Chairman, Senator Iyorchia Ayu, must step down before they can reconsider their stance.

The meeting was attended by aggrieved leaders of the party, including governors and ministers.

Part of their demand is for the chairmanship position to be relinquished to the South for the sake of balance, justice, and equity in the party.

Their position was contained in a communique read by former deputy national chairman of the party, Chief Bode George, after a meeting at Wike’s Port Harcourt private residence.

The group said their backing of Wike was not informed by his defeat at the presidential primary or non-emergence as the party’s vice-presidential candidate but for the sake of equity and justice in the opposition party.

Speaking after the meeting, former Minister of Information Prof. Jerry Gana said, “You cannot build on a faulty foundation.

“This call for the chairman to step down or resign is not because any of us is aggrieved but because we believe it is important to ensure a just, fair, principled, and constitutional structure for the party. If we want to restructure Nigeria, we should have the courage to restructure our party”.

Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo state, said: “We hope that the powers that be listen to the voice of reason and do the needful”.
