West Coast Legend and Grammy Winning Rapper, Coolio, Passes on at 59

Rapper Coolio, whose 1990s singles included “Gangsta’s Paradise” and “Fantastic Voyage,” was among the most well-known figures in hip-hop.

The rapper reportedly passed away in Los Angeles on September 28 at the age of 59, as confirmed by his manager.

According to his longtime manager Jarez Posey, the artist, whose real name is Artis Leon Ivey Jr., passed away at a friend’s home. De@th’s origin was not immediately known.

The song Gangsta’s Paradise, for which Coolio won the Grammy for best solo rap performance in 1995, is his most well-known work. The smash hit copied Stevie Wonder’s 1976 song Pastime Paradise and was taken from the soundtrack of the Michelle Pfeiffer movie Dangerous Minds.

He was nominated for five other Grammys during a career that began in the late 1980s.
