In response to the uproar over raised tuition fees, the University of Jos has made some changes which now allows students to pay in installments and has further reduced fees.
They’ve committed 2% of fees to assist needy students, with 50% going to scholarships for them and the other 50% to expand the work-study program. This decision, reached through negotiations with students and stakeholders, has been welcomed by the university community.

The protests led by the UNIJOS Students Union Government resulted from the initial fee hike, causing disruptions to campus activities. The students demanded a reversal in the fees hike especially with the economic difficulties faced by Nigerians.
Following this, UNIJOS reduced fees. Non-science students will pay N105,000, while science students will pay N135,000 or N140,000 for laboratory fees, depending on their programs.
Returning students who have one semester left to complete their studies will only pay 50% of the revised charges. The registration deadline has been extended by two weeks to October 8, 2023.
UNIJOS aims to assist needy students further by allocating a portion of fees and expanding its work-study program. They’ve also appointed student representatives to the Hostels Maintenance Committee.
New students’ fees have also been reduced. Fresh students offering GST courses will pay N130,000, down from the initial N180,000. Lab/studio/workshop charges are now set at N25,000 for exclusive users.
In addition to this, installment payments have been introduced, which offers more flexibility to students.
