FG Orders VCs To Reopen Varsities, Resume Lectures

The Federal Government has ordered vice-chancellors to reopen universities and ensure the resumption of lectures.

This was contained in a letter issued by Sam Onazi, Director, Finance and Accounts of the National Universities Commission, NUC, on behalf of Executive Secretary, Abubakar Rasheed.

The letter was addressed to all vice-chancellors; pro-chancellors and chairmen of governing councils of federal universities.

The letter partly read, “Ensure that ASUU members immediately resume/commence lectures; Restore the daily activities and routines of the various University campuses.”

The order is part of the federal government’s attempt to reopen the county’s universities with students being at home since February 14 when the Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, declared strike over a dispute with government.

There have been several negotiations between the union and the federal government to find a resolution but they have all proved futile.

The national industrial court had recently ordered ASUU to suspend the strike although ASUU had filed an appeal against the judgment.
