Nnamdi Azikiwe University (UNIZIK) witnessed a significant leadership change as Comrade Kingsley Ubaorji, a faculty member of the Department of Biochemistry, emerged as the new Chairperson of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) NAU Branch.
The closely contested election saw Comrade Ubaorji secure an impressive victory, garnering a total of 616 votes.
Comrade Ubaorji’s opponents, Comrade Dr. Okenwa CY Ogbodo, Comrade Dr. Uju Ezenekwe, and Comrade Dr. Peter Okoye, received 227, 141, and 81 votes, respectively. This landslide victory demonstrates the trust and confidence that the UNIZIK academic community has placed in Comrade Ubaorji’s leadership abilities.
In another closely watched race, Comrade Dr. Harrison Etaga triumphed over his opponent, Comrade Dr. Darlington Onyejike, to claim the position of Vice-Chairman. Comrade Etaga secured 570 votes, while his opponent garnered 438 votes.
Several other positions within the ASUU NAU Branch were decided through unopposed elections. Comrade Dr. Joseph Senator Onyejiaka emerged as the Secretary, Comrade Dr. Osita Nnajiofor as the Assistant General Secretary, Comrade Dr. Theophilus Okegbe as the Treasurer, Comrade Dr. Amaka Metu ATM as the Financial Secretary, Comrade Dr. Innocent Nnubia as the Internal Auditor, and Comrade Dr. Gideon Ezu as the Investment Secretary.
The race for the Welfare Officer position generated considerable excitement, with Comrade Engr. Dr. Chinenye Okey-Onyesolu emerging victorious by securing 566 votes. His opponent, Comrade Dr. Tonia Chigbo Obasi, received 458 votes.
The official result of the ASUU NAU election in 2023 highlights the democratic process within the university, with members casting their votes and participating in shaping the future of the institution. Comrade Ubaorji’s election as Chairperson signifies the beginning of a new era for UNIZIK’s academic staff, bringing hope for continued progress and development in the university community.
