ASUU Strike: NANS Blows Hot, Vows To Shut Down Nigeria

The National Association of Nigerian Students, NANS, has vowed to shut down the entire country if the Federal Government and the striking Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, fail to find a resolution to the strike.

This was stated by Comrade Usman Abubakar, the Students Union Government, SUG, President of the Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University, ATBU, at a press briefing organised by a NorthEast zone of the NANS on Friday in Bauchi.

ASUU Strike

Abubakar decried the impact of the lingering strike on students, noting that some students who are close to 30 years of age risk being exempted from NYSC because of overage.

He said, “The federal government and ASUU are clearly not thinking about how this strike will directly impact students’ lives. Most people who are close to 30 are at risk of not going for NYSC.

“Even those who might scale through to NYSC will also be denied job opportunities because, by the time they graduate, they will be older than the 26 or 27 years that banks and other firms require for graduate employment.

He added, “The annoying thing is that most of the people (FG and ASUU) fighting do not have their children in our schools, federal government and ASUU must find a way to end this strike which has lasted for seven months, else, we will shut down this country.”
