World Cup: Deschamps Discloses Plan After Benzema Injury

French national team coach, Didier Deschamps has said that he won’t name a replacement for injured forward, Karim Benzema.

Benzema was ruled out of the 2022 World Cup in Qatar after he sustained a thigh injury in training on Saturday.

There were hopes that the forward could recover in time for their second group game match against Denmark.

But Benzema took to his Instagram handle to confirm that he had withdrawn from the squad.

The development compounded Deschamps woe after he had lost Christopher Nkunku, Paul Pogba, Presnel Kipempe and N’Golo Kante.

Responding to a question on the likelihood of calling up a replacement for Benzema, Deschamps said, “Karim Benzema will be replaced?’, to which Deschamps said: ‘No’.

Meanwhile, the France national team made the following statement following Benzema’s withdrawal.

“Karim Benzema is forced to give up participating in the World Cup. The whole team shares Karim’s sadness and wishes him a speedy recovery.’

Deschamps added: “I am extremely sad for Karim Benzema who made this World Cup a major goal.

“Despite this new blow for the French team, I have full confidence in my group. We will do everything to meet the huge challenge that awaits us.”
