The Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, has cautioned that if its members are forced to return to the classroom by the industrial court, it will backfire.
Emmanuel Osodeke, President of ASUU, during a meeting with the leadership of the House of Representatives on Tuesday, wondered the kind of education students would get if lecturers are forced to resume work.
Recall that the federal government dragged ASUU to the National Industrial Court over the lingering industrial action by the union.
The case was adjourned on Monday by Justice Polycarp Hamman after listening to the arguments of the counsel on behalf of the parties. The court is scheduled to reconvene on Wednesday.
Osodeke while speaking before the closed-door session said forcing lecturers to resume work is similar to forcing doctors to attend to patients.

He said, “If the court forces the lecturers to go to work tomorrow, which type of teaching will they do? If the court forces the Nigerian academics — say go and teach against your will — just like the court forcing a doctor to go and treat a patient against your will, how many of us will go and meet that doctor.”
Femi Gbajabiamila, speaker of the House of Representatives, said that the meeting must bring about a solution to end the strike.
