Yet-to-be identified individuals have allegedly stolen the recently reinstalled airfield lighting systems at the local runway 18/36L of Murtala Muhammad Airport.
The missing approaching lighting systems have raised security issues in the country’s busiest airports.
A source who spoke anonymously to the Punch said those who made away with the lighting systems took advantage of the closure of the runway for more than three months.
According to the source, some FAAN workers plotted with outsiders to steal the airport lighting equipment.
The source said, “The criminal took advantage of the closure to commit the crime. I cannot give the actual worth of the theft, but almost all the lighting was removed. The permanent secretary came around to see for himself the huge damage done. A lot of FAAN officials have been suspended.”
Reports say that some heads of critical departments at FAAN have been suspended over the missing lighting equipment on the directives of the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Aviation, Dr Emmanuel Meribole.
The source added that an investigation has been launched to fish out those responsible for the missing safety equipment.
Speaking on, the source said such acts of theft and incursion was undertaken at airports by a syndicate, comprising of some staff of the agencies, who enjoy access to restricted areas in connivance with people from outside.
A high ranking FAAN official who chose to remain anonymous said the agency’s Managing Director, Mr Kabir Yusuf, was displeased with the development.
He stated that FAAN MD had also ordered the suspension of security personnel who were in charge of guarding critical airport facilities.
