The Nigerian Senate has voted against the government’s plans to increase electricity tariffs and remove subsidies.
This decision comes after a motion by Senator Aminu Abbas (PDP, Adamawa Central) calling for the retention of electricity subsidies due to current economic hardship. Last week, Power Minister Adebayo Adelabu warned that the current subsidy system was unsustainable due to a N3 trillion debt to power and gas companies.

Despite the minister’s concerns, Senate spokesperson Yemi Adraamodu reiterated the Senate’s stance against any price increases that burden Nigerians.
