Five Men Burnt To Death For Allegedly Trying To Steal Tricycle In Onitsha

Five men have been reportedly burnt to death in Onitsha, Anambra state for allegedly trying to steal a tricycle, popularly known as Keke Napep.

A source in Onitsha, who narrated the story to DAILY POST, said the men tried to steal a tricycle from the owner in broad daylight when they ran out of luck and were caught.

The source said the incident took place at old Nkpor road, close to the headquarters of People’s Club, in the commercial city of Onitsha.

“Mob who gathered after the men were rounded up, refused the advice of some people to call in the police.

“They first started by striping the men naked and beating them up, and eventually, some people brought old tyres and fuel, and they were set ablaze.

“It was a very bad sight today, and everyone watched and supervised, while the men burnt to death,” he said.

When contacted on Sunday, the state Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Tochukwu Ikenga, condemned the act and urged the people to always take suspects to police stations whenever they are apprehended as this will help the security operatives.

Ikenga, however, said five telephone handsets of different brands and a tricycle suspected to have been stolen by the suspects were recovered from the scene of the incident.

He said, “Before police operatives got to the scene at about 5.30pm, the suspects had already been set ablaze. The operatives recovered five phones of different brands and a tricycle suspected to have been stolen by the suspects who were lynched.
