The stampede which marks one of the most deadly stadium disasters in the world occurred in the late hours of Saturday after a football match between Arema FC and Persebaya Surabaya at Kanjuruhan Stadium, Malang.   

Indonesia Football Mach Pitch Invasion

Police report said irate Arema fans encroached the pitch after their team were beaten 3-2.  

According to East Java police boss, Nico Afinta, officers of the force fired tear gas in an attempt to disperse the fans who were engaged in fisticuffs led to a stampede as fans rushed to exit the stadium through the gates.

Nico told BBC, “It had gotten anarchic. They started attacking officers, they damaged cars.

“We would like to convey that… not all of them were anarchic. Only about 3,000 who entered the pitch.

He added that the fleeing fans “went out to one point at the exit. Then there was a build-up, in the process of accumulation there was shortness of breath, lack of oxygen”.

An estimated 180 people sustained different degrees of injury in the stampede as viral social media videos show the moment fans were struggling to escape.
