In the upcoming 2023 CAF Awards, Victor Osimhen and Asisat Oshoala are poised to achieve a remarkable dual victory as the CAF Players of the Year for both men and women.
The recent Ballon d’Or ceremony in Paris on Monday night provided substantial support for this expectation. Osimhen was ranked as the eighth-best player globally, while Oshoala, the sole African nominee in the women’s category, secured a respectable 20th place.
Osimhen’s rise to prominence in the world of football can be attributed to his exceptional performance with Napoli last season. He became the first African player to be crowned the Goal King of Serie A, and his goals played a pivotal role in securing the league title for his club after a wait of more than three decades.
On the other hand, Oshoala’s achievements include winning the treble, which includes a second UEFA Women’s Champions League title with Barcelona Femeni last season. She also delivered a solid performance at this year’s World Cup in Australia and New Zealand, where Nigeria exceeded most expectations by reaching the knockout rounds.
‘Oshoala,’ also known as ‘Agba Baller,’ has already claimed the CAF Player of the Year Award a remarkable four times, and winning it in December in Morocco would be the crowning achievement for the iconic figure in Nigerian football. As for Osimhen, he stands out as a genuinely world-class star from Nigeria.
