Nigeria And China’s Naval Forces Partner To Ensure Security In The Gulf Of Guinea

The Nigerian Navy and the Chinese Navy have joined forces in a collaborative effort to enhance security in the Gulf of Guinea.

A delegation from China, consisting of the Chinese Navy Escort Task Group 162, including the MSL Destroyer NANNING, MSL Frigate SANYA, and Supply Ship WEISHANHU, recently visited Nigeria with the aim of strengthening bilateral relations between the two nations.

Rear Admiral Joseph Akpan, the Flag Officer Commanding Western Naval Command, emphasized that the arrival of the Chinese naval ships symbolize the partnership between the Nigerian and Chinese navies, particularly in addressing the security challenges prevalent in the Gulf of Guinea.

During the visit, the MSL Destroyer NANNING docked at Berth 21 of the Nigerian Ports Authority, while the other two ships remained at anchorage, according to the News Agency of Nigeria.

Chinese Ambassador to Nigeria, Mr. Chi Chun, highlighted the significance of the visit in fostering deeper cooperation and friendship between the two countries. He expressed confidence that the collaboration between China and Nigeria, especially in the military sector, would overcome challenges and contribute to peace and harmony.

Rear Admiral Akpan described the visit as an alliance between the Nigerian Navy, the Chinese Navy, and the military. He emphasized that the collaboration would bolster efforts to combat criminal activities, particularly in the Gulf of Guinea. The visit would also facilitate discussions on future cooperation, mutual benefits, and exchanges between the two navies.

As part of the visit, Nigerian Navy personnel would have the opportunity to interact with their Chinese counterparts through various activities, including sports, exchange of mementos, and gifts. The concept of “sea riders” would enable Nigerian Navy personnel to be on board Chinese ships and vice versa, fostering friendship and understanding.

The Chinese community in Lagos warmly welcomed the Chinese envoy at the Nigerian Ports Authority, demonstrating their support for the visit. The Chinese delegation showcased their vibrant culture through a colorful and synchronized dance routine, adding to the spirit of cooperation and friendship between the two nations.
