Court Sentence Man To Life Imprisonment For Attempted Murder

In a recent ruling, Justice Blessing Egwu of a High Court in Calabar, Cross River State, has sentenced 33-year-old Jide Afolayan Sunday to life imprisonment for a heinous act. Sunday was found guilty of attempted murder for pouring acid on his girlfriend, Glory Sylvester Ita, as a result of her refusal to marry him.

The judge ordered that Sunday serve his life sentence at the Calabar Medium Security Custodial Centre and also pay N10 million as compensation for the victim’s surgery. Justice Egwu emphasized that the prosecution successfully established the charge of attempted murder, which was a well-planned act.

Sunday had been in police custody for several months due to the attempted murder of Ita, during which he severely burnt her with acid, causing significant injuries to her ear, breast, and other parts of her body. He also attempted to push her into a pool to drown her.

The incident occurred during a heated argument at Reel home Hotel, Ekon-Etta off Marian Road, Calabar, on October 21, 2022, following a breakup between the couple.

Sunday had proposed marriage to Ita after their nine-month relationship, and when she rejected his proposal and threatened to end the relationship, he resorted to this violent act.

Throughout the trial, Sunday claimed that Ita had poured the acid on him, but the evidence clearly pointed to her as the victim. He was subsequently arrested and charged in court on January 24.
