A Rivers State High Court in Isiokpo, Ikwerre Local Government Area, has issued an injunction preventing the State House of Assembly and the Chief Justice of the State from impeaching the Governor of Rivers State, Sir Siminalayi Fubara.
This decision comes in response to a lawsuit filed by Sir Siminalayi Fubara, who sought an interim order to halt the impeachment process. The lawsuit, registered as suit number IHC/230/CS/2023, listed the Rivers State House of Assembly as the 1st Defendant, the Speaker of the Rivers State House of Assembly as the 2nd Defendant, the Deputy Speaker as the 3rd Defendant, the Clerk of the Rivers State House of Assembly as the 4th Defendant, and the Chief Justice of the State as the 5th Defendant.

Mr. Damian Okoro, SAN, represented the State Government in court and requested an interim injunction to suspend any actions related to Fubara’s impeachment process until the case is determined.
The court granted the interim order, preventing the Rivers State House of Assembly, the Speaker, Deputy Speaker, Clerk, and Chief Judge of the State from taking any actions regarding the impeachment of the Governor until the Motion on Notice is heard.
The case has been adjourned until November 14, 2023, for further proceedings. The State Commissioner for Information and Communications, Joseph Johnson, stated that he was not aware of these developments at the time of the report.
