Why We lost 4-0 To Portugal – Super Eagles Manager, Peseiro

Jose Peseiro, Super Eagles head coach has blamed poor first-half performance for his team’s trashing by Portugal in a friendly match on Thursday.

He described the defeat as too much for the African giants who faced Qatar 2022 World Cup bound Portugal in a friendly match.

Manchester United midfielder, Bruno Fernandes fired two goals in the first half while Goncalo Ramos and Joao Mario rounded off the goals with their second-half strike to cap a deserved win for the Portuguese team.

The Super Eagles missed a chance to pull one back when debutant Bright Osayi-Samuel was fouled in the box.

However, Emmanuel Dennis failed to convert the penalty kick as Rui Patricio saved the day for his team.

Reacting to the defeat, Peseiro in an interview with NFF TV, expressed disappointment with the result.

He said, “Losing 4-0 was too much, we didn’t start well in the first half we didn’t show good organisation and we didn’t pressure the opponent. It’s true the opponent has too much quality but like I said the first half was not good but the second half was much better.

“I believe in the second half we showed we can so better, we missed a penalty and conceded two more goals. We must improve because we want to win the next AFCON.”

Commenting on Dennis missing the penalty, Peseiro said, “We need to defend our players. Which player has not missed a penalty before? Any player can miss a penalty so Emmanuel Dennis has my support.”
