U-17 WWC: Flamingos Bow To Colombians On Penalties

Nigeria’s U-17 side, the Flamingos have been kicked out of the 2022 FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup in India courtesy of a 6-5 penalty shootout defeat against Columbia.

Both sides played out a 0-0 draw after 90 minutes, taking the match to the penalty shootout.

The Nigerian side had goal-scoring chances through Emmanuel Blessing and Shakirat Oyinlola.

Faith Omilana, the goalkeeper of the Flamingos denied the Columbians some goal-scoring chances with impressive saves.

Late in the first half, the South Americans scored a goal but it was deemed as an offside.

Flamingos head coach, Bankole Olowookere subbed off Fatimo Adeshina with Opeyemi Ajakaye after the first half.

The Nigerian girls were pressured in the second half but stood their ground and kept the South Americans at bay.  

Omilana was replaced by second-choice goalkeeper Linda Jiwuaku at 90 minutes.

After both teams failed to find the back of the net in normal time, the match proceeded straight to penalties.

The Nigerian side netted their first penalties while the Colombians scored six to proceed to the final.

The match marked the first time the Flamingos featured in the semi-finals of the competition.
