The Scottish giants conceded 22 goals and scored only twice, resulting in a goal difference of -20 which stands as the worst-ever record in the group stage of the competition.

Rangers which used to parade Nigerian stars, Leon Balogun, Calvin Bassey and Joe Aribo, lost 4-0 to Ajax in their first match, 3-0 to Napoli at home, and 2-0 away against Liverpool before bagging their first goal in the fourth game.

They scored through Scott Arfield before Liverpool netted seven in Scotland, Napoli beat them 3-0 in Italy followed by a 3-1 loss to Ajax yesterday night, with James Tavernier converting a penalty.

Their manager, Giovanni van Bronckhorst expressed disappointment after the match against Ajax.

He told BT Sport, “To compete against Ajax we needed to have the pressure moments but we weren’t able to create those moments. We lacked a little bit of energy to keep pressing high.

“Well, they had six days off – their league is thinking about their players. They played their last game on Wednesday and they come here really fresh.

“We, of course, we played a game and have some injuries. We tried but these are teams that are competing for several years at this level. It’s our first after 12 years.”
