A Toyota Corolla belonging to one Mr Celestine Ohaechosim, a lecturer at the Nnamdi Azikiwe University has gone up in flames during the congress of the institution’s chapter of the Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU.

The incident which happened around 3pm beside the ASUU NAU Secretariat disrupted proceedings as members of the union ran for safety while efforts were made to put off the flames

Speaking on the incident, a lecturer and former special assistant to the vice-chancellor, Dr Kingsley Ubaoji, said that there was a distress call of fire outbreak outside and I came out to see what had caused the fire and help put it off. The affected car was parked next to mine”.

On what could have caused the outbreak, Ohaechosim said “the car was parked on dry grass, and already had a heated engine. Given the present hot weather condition, it is easy for a fire to start up, especially with the hot engine”.

Another eye witness Dr Amaka Agbata, while expressing shock at the incident said a colleague had raised an alarm that a corolla car was on fire, coming out, behold it was the car I and my colleague stepped out from just 15mins ago.”

She noted that the car was parked under a shade before they left for the faculty building and showed no sign of overheating. It’s hard to understand why it caught fire, Agbata added.
