A stalwart of the New Nigeria Peoples Party, NNPP, Ali Madaki, has been detained by the Kano police command over alleged illegal possession of firearms.
Madaki was invited for questioning by the police on Wednesday, TheCable reports.
The development was confirmed by the police spokesperson in Kano, Harua Abdullahi, on Thursday morning.
According to Abdullahi, Madaki is still being held by the police and investigation is ongoing.
Makaki was elected as a house of representatives member for Dala federal constituency of Kano in the just concluded election on Saturday.

This follows the arrest of the majority leader of the house of representatives, Alhassan Doguwa, by the police for his alleged role in attacks in Kano state during the general election.
Doguwa was charged to court on Wednesday and remanded in prison over alleged criminal conspiracy, culpable homicide, unlawful possession of a firearm, mischief, and public disturbance.
Violent clashes were reported in Kano during the elections.
