Ibrahim Traore, army captain in Burkina Faso, has toppled the country’s military ruler, Paul-Henri Damiba.

Traore disclosed this in a national broadcast on Friday evening.

Sporadic gunshots were reported on Friday from the military base and some residential areas in Burkina Faso’s capital, Ougadougou.

Reacting, Damiba, in a statement issued through the presidency’s Facebook page said the development was the result of mood swing of soldiers, urging the people not to panic over information gotten from social media.

He added that talks were ongoing to restore normalcy.

However, Traore in a broadcast on Friday cited Damiba’s failure to make good of his promises as the reason for the coup.

He said, “Faced with the deteriorating situation, we tried several times to get Damiba to refocus the transition on the security question.

“Damiba’s actions gradually convinced us that his ambitions were diverting away from what we set out to do. We decided this day to remove Damiba.”

Traore added that Damiba had rebuffed proposals by the officers to rejig the army but instead continued with the military structure that had prompted the overthrow of the previous government.

He also announced that borders were closed indefinitely and all political activities were suspended.

The latest coup is the second coup witnessed in the country in the past eight months. Damila had on January 24, 2022, ousted President Roch Kabore.
